B Grade Open Concert BandFrom The Core - level 4.5 -5, duration 11 minutes,
Published Graham Lloyd Music, Written Graham Lloyd Commissioned by Hunter Central Coast Regional Wind Ensemble to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the sister city relationship between Newcastle, NSW and Ube, Japan. The Newcastle area of Australia is the country’s coal capital. Coal is mined in the surrounding area which is then transported by rail (using locomotives and rail trucks in excess of 1 kilometer [¾ of a mile] in total length) to the Newcastle sea port. The coal is then loaded onto ships which ‘set sail’ and slowly disappear over the horizon to wherever their destination lies. From the Core is a musical depiction of this process from beginning to end. The work is in 4 distinct sections, the first is a calm, musical portrayal of coal forming underground over millions of years. The silence, isolation and darkness many kilometers underground were my main thoughts through this section. The 2nd section sees the abrupt arrival of man, machines and explosives bringing unbelievable noise and confusion to an otherwise tranquil scene. The coal is mined, brought to the surface and loaded onto numerous rail coal trucks. This movement is designed as a bit of a shock following the calmness of the first section. The 3rd section is the transportation of the coal by rail over the many kilometers to the Newcastle shipyards where the coal is loaded onto ships. The final section (12/8) sees these fully laden ships heading out to sea. The ‘majesty’ of these ships is what I’m trying to portray in this section. As an aside, this final section begins in the key of C (a play on the word ‘sea’) Digital copy for you to print- A$80.00

D Grade Open Concert BandPlus Ultra - level 3.5 duration 10 minutes
Published Graham Lloyd Music, Written Graham Lloyd Plus Ultra was commissioned by the Music Director of St Peter’s Lutheran College, (Indooroopilly, QLD), Grant Mason, a long-time friend. The title, Plus Ultra, is the school’s motto which translates into ‘forever higher’–and refers to the positive attitude towards learning that is embraced by both the staff and students of the school. Plus Ultra was composed in three movements: the 1st movement has been subtitled Academically, the 2nd, Morally and the 3rd, Spiritually, which are three of many important qualities that are encouraged at the school at all levels. I have attempted to portray these three qualities, in particular, within the music. Plus Ultra began with the completion of the 2nd movement from which musical material was extracted for the other two movements. The whole work is based on just three notes which are first sounded in the lead trumpets in bar one. This three-note-motive appears time and again throughout the work in some form or other. As a composer, melody is important to me so I have attempted to write melodies in all three movements that are both tuneful and memorable, although I have to say, the principle melody in the 2nd movement is a particular favourite. I hope you enjoy, Plus Ultra. Graham Lloyd Digital copy for you to print- A$50.00
C Grade Open Concert BandVisions of Australia - Published Barnhouse, Written Graham Lloyd
Published: 2008 Grade: 5 Performance Time: 8:14 'Visions of Australia' is a musical panorama paying tribute to the epochs in Australia's history from its Aboriginal predecessors through to its 'yet to be determined' future. The journey begins with a tribute to Australia's aboriginal past, the arrival of the British Navy and the establishment of the first colony on the shores of Sydney Harbour. The journey then meanders through to the development of electricity and communication, through the wars and to the present. Following a brief reflection on the past, the music concludes with a stirring and patriotic march-like section representing a confident and bold future. The work is a great challenge for all sections of the band and will be easily accessible to any audience. Flight to freedom - Level 4.5 - 5, duration 9 minutes
Published Graham Lloyd music, written Graham Lloyd commissioned by the Queensland Wind and Brass, conducted by Paul Kucharski. A musical depiction which follows the true story of Michael Milekic, a pilot who escaped from Communist held Yugoslavia to Italy by flying his plane at 400 klm per hour, 20 ft above the sea to escape detection all the while knowing he could be shot out of the sky or that one mistake could send him to his death. A moving tribute to a brave man.
The music begins with a build in tension using unison notes followed by ‘heart beats’ in the percussion. The sounding of the ‘old’ Yugoslavian anthem is featured with ‘military’ side drum beats. The anthem, in ¾ time, has been placed over a 4/4 drum pattern. The anthem is then superimposed on itself in different note lengths to assimilate, what I imagined would be, Michael’s inner turmoil of embarking on a dangerous and life changing course. The music moves into a depiction of the aircraft taxiing then taking off. I have then attempted to write music describing the freedom of flight as he carried out various aerobatics.
The patrolling jets then make an entrance in the music which is followed by his decision to ‘go’ and full throttling to 20 feet above the ocean. The next section of the music is ‘full on’ with speed and energy with ‘imagined’ machine gun sounds and other effects. This section is what I see as the ‘adrenalin pumped’ part of the flight.
The Italian coast is then sighted and crossed with strains of the US Anthem in the background. The music moves into the landing and finishes with an unresolved feeling as Michael is detained by US troops (The Land of the Free?). Had he made the right decision, after all?

Successive Flames - Published Graham Lloyd Music, Written Graham Lloyd
Commissioned by the Eltham College Intermediate Band conducted by Andrew Mathers
Conductor’s notes. Successive Flames was composed in 2001 as a ‘joint’ venture between myself and the members of the Eltham College Intermediate Band, conducted (at that time) by Andrew Mathers. Andrew wished to have the work written with the collaboration of the band members so they could be part of the overall composition process.
Successive Flames (a title chosen by the band members) was the result.
The work is fairly straight forward beginning with a ‘ground bass’ on which a haunting melody has been added (at ‘5’). The melodic line continues to build in volume through to the first climax point (39). The work then returns to the original style and again builds to 84.
The initial tempo is crucial to the whole work. The marked tempo must be strictly maintained otherwise the melodic line and harmonic progression will be flawed–particularly so when you reach 84.
At 84, the style of the work changes, totally–but please note, the tempo does not vary. The melodic material remains basically the same. If the indicated tempo (from the beginning) is not strictly adhered to, this section will simply ‘not work’. Drum kit is the preferred choice beginning on the 2nd beat of 83 (see Perc 1).
136 sees a return to the melodic material in its original form, style and tempo which progresses, through a final regulated crescendo, to the final bars.
I hope your ensemble enjoys performing Successive Flames
