When Dianne Olsen, Wayne Bowden’s partner, asked me to write a work to celebrate Wayne’s 70th birthday it was clear to me from the start that I was going to have a lot of fun composing this work. Wayne and I have been great mates for decades and we have so many similarities in our lives that it’s almost frightening. One clear similarity we have is our dedication to and curiosity about all things music. So, in this composition I decided to add ‘touches’ to the score that I knew Wayne would really appreciate…and would go ‘hunting for them’. So, for Wayne (and anyone else equally as curious): 1) I’ve based the main melodies on the letters of his name using a matrix of the alphabet alongside the musical alphabet; 2) I’ve added an all too infrequent V-VI Interrupted Cadence in a minor key (they’re everywhere in music literature in the major key, but not the minor key, so I’ve taken the opportunity to skew this oversight towards the minor key); 3) I’ve included a Neapolitan 6th; 4) a German 6th; 5) a Sequence; and 6) a Phrygian Cadence (Wayne and I have had many a chat about march composers and he’s well aware that my favourite march composer is Kenneth Alford, and my favourite march of all time is Army of the Nile. I’ve nicked the Phrygian Cadence from Army of the Nile and added it into this march just for my fun and hopefully, for Wayne’s amusement).
Dianne asked if I could utilise the tune of Happy Birthday in some way. Now, this was a tough thing to do because it’s such a well-known and simple tune that to place it in the music as it ‘stands’ would potentially create a tawdry musical outcome, so, apart from the obvious usage of the tune in the introduction, I’ve ‘hidden’ it within the notes on a number of occasions. I also managed to squeeze the year Wayne was born into the notes. The year, 1952, gives me a root, 9th, 5th and supertonic. This figure features mainly in the basses:
Finally, I couldn’t help myself, but I added a real ‘Lloyd-ism’ and that’s the three-part counterpoint figure that commences at bar 121 and climaxes on a V-VI interrupted cadence…in the major key, this time.

Level Brass Band B grade
The Andante from the first movement of Mendelssohn's Italian Symphony (often nicknamed Pilgrims' March) contains the most beautifully haunting melody supported by the simplest of bass lines and counterpoint figures. As a young musician, Graham Lloyd was so fascinated by this music he bought the orchestral score to study the notes, which at the time made little sense to him. However, he did notice that the bass line was similar to a walking bass line in a standard swing tune. In this composition Graham Lloyd uses Mendelssohn's original bass line, melodic line and counterpoint figures but gives them a swing feel. Who knows, maybe if Mendelssohn had been born a hundred years later, he could have become one of our big band leaders!

Through a Soldier's eyes - Brass band
For Brass Band (A Grade)
By Graham Lloyd Program/Conductor’s Notes: Through a Soldier’s Eyes initially began as a tribute to Weary Dunlop (famous Australian WWII Army surgeon, ex-POW and hero of thousands of ex-POWs). However, I realised within a short time that I haven’t yet developed my musical skills to the point where I believe I could do justice to this fine Aussie. Instead, I retained the basic ideas I had already sketched and developed them into a depiction of the emotions a soldier might experience when leaving loved ones and preparing for and going into battle. Published Graham Lloyd Music, Written Graham Lloyd Commissioned by Hunter Central Coast Regional Wind Ensemble to celebrate the
30th Anniversary of the sister city relationship between Newcastle, NSW and Ube, Japan.
The Newcastle area of Australia is the country’s coal capital. Coal is mined in the surrounding area which is then transported by rail (using locomotives and rail trucks in excess of 1 kilometer [¾ of a mile] in total length) to the Newcastle sea port. The coal is then loaded onto ships which ‘set sail’ and slowly disappear over the horizon to wherever their destination lies.
From the Core is a musical depiction of this process from beginning to end.
The work is in 4 distinct sections, the first is a calm, musical portrayal of coal forming underground over millions of years. The silence, isolation and darkness many kilometers underground were my main thoughts through this section. The 2nd section sees the abrupt arrival of man, machines and explosives bringing unbelievable noise and confusion to an otherwise tranquil scene. The coal is mined, brought to the surface and loaded onto numerous rail coal trucks. This movement is designed as a bit of a shock following the calmness of the first section. The 3rd section is the transportation of the coal by rail over the many kilometers to the Newcastle shipyards where the coal is loaded onto ships. The final section (12/8) sees these fully laden ships heading out to sea. The ‘majesty’ of these ships is what I’m trying to portray in this section. As an aside, this final section begins in the key of C (a play on the word ‘sea’)

Published Graham Lloyd Music, Written Graham Lloyd Plus Ultra was commissioned by the Music Director of St Peter’s Lutheran College, (Indooroopilly, QLD), Grant Mason, a long-time friend. The title, Plus Ultra, is the school’s motto which translates into ‘forever higher’–and refers to the positive attitude towards learning that is embraced by both the staff and students of the school.
Plus Ultra was composed in three movements: the 1st movement has been subtitled Academically, the 2nd, Morally and the 3rd, Spiritually, which are three of many important qualities that are encouraged at the school at all levels. I have attempted to portray these three qualities, in particular, within the music.
Plus Ultra began with the completion of the 2nd movement from which musical material was extracted for the other two movements. The whole work is based on just three notes which are first sounded in the lead trumpets in bar one. This three-note-motive appears time and again throughout the work in some form or other.
As a composer, melody is important to me so I have attempted to write melodies in all three movements that are both tuneful and memorable, although I have to say, the principle melody in the 2nd movement is a particular favourite.
I hope you enjoy, Plus Ultra.

Flight to Freedom -Graham Lloyd
PUBLISHED Graham Lloyd Music pty ltd. commissioned by the Queensland Wind and Brass, conducted by Paul Kucharski.
A musical depiction which follows the true story of Michael Milekic, a pilot who escaped from Communist held Yugoslavia to Italy by flying his plane at 400 klm per hour, 20 ft above the sea to escape detection all the while knowing he could be shot out of the sky or that one mistake could send him to his death. A moving tribute to a brave man.
The music begins with a build in tension using unison notes followed by ‘heart beats’ in the percussion. The sounding of the ‘old’ Yugoslavian anthem is featured with ‘military’ side drum beats. The anthem, in ¾ time, has been placed over a 4/4 drum pattern. The anthem is then superimposed on itself in different note lengths to assimilate, what I imagined would be, Michael’s inner turmoil of embarking on a dangerous and life changing course. The music moves into a depiction of the aircraft taxiing then taking off. I have then attempted to write music describing the freedom of flight as he carried out various aerobatics. The patrolling jets then make an entrance in the music which is followed by his decision to ‘go’ and full throttling to 20 feet above the ocean. The next section of the music is ‘full on’ with speed and energy with ‘imagined’ machine gun sounds and other effects. This section is what I see as the ‘adrenalin pumped’ part of the flight. The Italian coast is then sighted and crossed with strains of the US Anthem in the background. The music moves into the landing and finishes with an unresolved feeling as Michael is detained by US troops (The Land of the Free?). Had he made the right decision, afterall?
